Every Sunday from 3:00 to around 4:30 at the Seal Rock Fire Station (next to the SR Garden Club and behind Houser’s Gallery with the big dragon out front) up until the mid-term election we will gather to write friendly postcards to Democratic voters… sometimes for a specific candidate, sometimes for a ballot measure. Thus far we have handwritten reminders to Oregon voters about measure105, and to targeted voters through TonyTheDemocrat’s Postcards to Voters giving Democrats coast-to-coast a winning edge in close, key races. And soon we will start writing for Jamie McLeod-Skinner, running against Rep. Greg Walden (Republican and Trumpster) in Eastern Oregon. And there are cookies. To learn more about it, click here:
There is also postcard writing with the Florence Area Democratic Club (FADC) on Thursdays from 2 to 3:30 at the FADC office, just north of the Florence Freddie’s on Highway 101.
Local Activists Take a Stand
Want to take a public stand in support of kindness, decency, the democratic principles of our Constitution, honest news media, respect for all people, health care, reproductive freedom, and a healthy planet? Want to declare publicly your refusal to be bullied out of our collective humanity? Come join local activists in Yachats in front of the old bank building each Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30, beginning Sept 26 and continuing until the election. Bring signs.
Mass incarceration and Oregon's Sanctuary Status
It's hard to get good information about what's going on with immigrants incarcerated in Oregon and across the country. Solea Kabakov of Gorge Ice Resistance created an excellent short documentary about NORCOR and its history with ICE, updated April 2018, which helps explain the need to protect Oregon's Sanctuary State status. Please click here to take a few minutes to watch it.
Rural Organizing Project invites us to join them in supporting our immigrant community members who have been incarcerated indefinitely, despite having committed no crime, by:
1) Spreading the word to vote NO on Measure 105 (the anti-Sanctuary State measure), and
2) Joining them in the Journey to Unshackle Oregon: a 7-day journey to end detention and deportaion from Sunday, Sept 20 to Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018.
